In an incredible boost to Odisha’s infrastructure development, the Khurda Road-Balangir railway project has secured the crucial stage II forest clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. This approval paves the way for the project to move forward, minimizing environmental impact while maximizing economic benefits. The East Coast Railway (ECoR) announced the development on Friday, marking a major milestone in the project’s journey.
The Khurda Road-Balangir railway project is a game-changer for Odisha, aiming to reduce travel time between Bhubaneswar and Balangir, and foster economic growth across the region. The project involves laying tracks on a 301 km stretch, with 226 km already completed. The remaining 75 km stretch between Purunakatak and Daspalla is currently underway.
One of the most significant environmental challenges faced by the project was the forest clearance between Daspalla and Purunakatak, which involved 594.618 hectares of dense forest. However, through careful planning and consultation with the forest department, the project team developed a comprehensive wildlife conservation plan, approved by the principal chief conservator of forests (Wildlife), Odisha.
The plan incorporates provisions like animal passages (both over and under the railway tracks) and bridges for waterway and wildlife movement, minimizing disruptions to the surrounding ecosystem. All engineering solutions, including viaducts and tunnels, were designed to reduce tree felling and protect the forest cover.
The railway tracks include seven tunnels over a 75-km stretch between Daspalla and Purunakatak, totaling 12.76 km. These tunnels represent some of the most challenging engineering feats in railway construction, showcasing the project’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
