Partial resume of visa services in Canada was preceded by several levels of talks

Following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s citation of “credible evidence” suggesting a possible connection between the assassination of pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar and Indian operatives, India last month blocked new visa applications and requested that Canada scale back its diplomatic presence.India resumed some visa services in Canada on Thursday after more than ten days of discussions at various levels, according to an Indian official. This was made possible by the Canadian government’s “greater responsiveness” to New Delhi’s worries about the safety and security of its diplomatic personnel and facilities.

According to the Indian official, four of the eight categories of visa services for Canadians have been streamlined for the advantage of business dealings and people of Indian origin (PIOs). The suspension of visa services prevented Indian-origin Canadian nationals without Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards from travelling to India. With the start of entry visa processing on Thursday, the problem was fixed. The official stated, “This will address 85% of those without OCI cards.” Only PIOs are eligible for the entrance visa.
