Law and order are the responsibility of states, but they are also linked to the nation’s unity and integrity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday. PM Modi told the Chintan Shivir of state home ministers via video conference that the ongoing brainstorming session at Surajkund in Haryana is a “excellent example of cooperative federalism.”
States can learn from one another, be inspired by one another, and collaborate for the betterment of the country – this is the sentiment of the Constitution and our duty to our citizens,” he said. He also proposed ‘one nation, one police uniform,’ saying states/UTs should discuss whether this is feasible.
The prime minister stated that law and order are no longer limited to a single state, as crime is becoming more interstate and international. Referring to the use of technology by criminals from outside the border, PM Modi emphasised the importance of coordination between state and federal law enforcement agencies.
The prime minister also warned about fake news, saying it can cause havoc across the country.
“Stringent action against negative forces is our responsibility for the safety and rights of law-abiding citizens.A single piece of fake news can cause havoc across the country. We will need to educate people to think before forwarding anything, to verify before believing it, and to think before forwarding anything “He stated.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the two-day Chintan Shivir is an attempt to provide a national perspective to policy formulation on internal security-related issues. The Shivir will discuss topics such as police force modernization, cybercrime management, increased use of IT in the criminal justice system, land border management, coastal security, women’s safety, and drug trafficking, among others.
