Prafulla Samal, a distinguished politician and advocate, has been committed in championing the causes of education and social welfare in Odisha. Born on August 15, 1947, in Bhadrak, Samal’s journey has been one of dedication and service to his community. With a background rooted in education and law, he has utilized his knowledge and experience to uplift the marginalized sections of society.
Samal’s educational journey began with a Bachelor of Science degree from Bhadrak College under Utkal University in 1969. He further pursued his passion for law, obtaining an LLB from M.S. Law College, Bhadrak, in 1974. Armed with these qualifications, he embarked on a multifaceted career as an advocate and a social worker. His commitment to education extended beyond his personal pursuits, as evidenced by his tenure as a part-time lecturer at M.S. Law College from 1982 to 1985.
Entering the realm of politics in 1971, Samal’s trajectory took a new direction as he became deeply involved in addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by his constituents. Over the years, he has held various positions of responsibility, including serving as a Member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly and representing the Bhandaripokhari Vidhan Sabha Constituency. As a founding member of the Biju Janata Dal (B.J.D.) on December 18, 1997, Samal has been instrumental in shaping the political landscape of Odisha.
On February 10, 2024, Samal graced the XIM UG Scholarship Awarding Ceremony with his presence, where he was invited as Chief Guest, he shared invaluable insights into the importance of scholarships in fostering educational opportunities for students from marginalized backgrounds. Addressing the audience, he emphasized the significance of scholarships in enabling deserving students to pursue their academic aspirations. Highlighting the plight of students from economically weaker sections, Samal underscored the critical role scholarships play in breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering individuals to build a better future.
More than 100 students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds were awarded scholarships at the ceremony, alongside 23 school students who achieved exceptional academic excellence by securing over 90% in their 12th-grade board examinations. Samal commended the efforts of XIM in recognizing and supporting these meritorious students, emphasizing that such initiatives not only provide financial assistance but also instill a sense of competition and motivation among students to excel academically.
In addition to supporting students from marginalized backgrounds, Samal acknowledged the Odisha government’s efforts in providing scholarships to aspiring professionals in fields like medicine and engineering. Recognizing education as the cornerstone of societal development, he reiterated the need for continued investment in educational initiatives to nurture talent and drive progress.
