Born into a lower middle-class family, Samal had had a forgettable childhood. His family lived on farming and the financial condition was not that healthy as well. Samal had to battle several odds to complete his education. But he had always wanted to be self-independent and start a firm of his own in future. After graduation, he moved to Faridabad in search of a job. With no prior work experience and savings in hand, it was quite a struggle for Samal initially. He finally landed a job at a cement research centre in Faridabad where he worked for a brief period. Post that, he joined a water treatment company where he was introduced to the world of water treatment technology.
Despite a meagre salary and several arduous circumstances, Samal didn’t give up and took positives from every situation. Later, he quit his job to complete a diploma course in New Delhi to hone his skills in Environment Science. “While pursuing my course in New Delhi, all my savings had dried up. I had no friend or relative around me to look up to. Out of desperation, I did several part-time jobs to feed my stomach. I remember, every day I used to travel from Faridabad to New Delhi to complete my course. Then I used to do my part-time job in the afternoon and return back to Faridabad late at night. It was tiring on my part to juggle between studies and work but I never complained,” he recollecs.
After two years of intense struggle, Samal worked for another New-Delhi based water treatment company which was a life-changing experience for him. Not only was he exposed to various aspects of water and wastewater management and technology, but also climbed the rungs of success in the company. Such was his contribution towards the company that he was promoted to the top post in the eastern India belt. Despite lucrative offers from various other companies, he finally quit his plum job. He came to Bhubaneswar and founded ENVA Water Technologies Pvt. Ltd. He says, “Back then, the concept of water and wastewater treatment was relatively new. There were only a handful of companies working in this sector. Thus, we thought of leveraging this opportunity to provide reliable water and wastewater treatment solutions to our customers. Initially, it took time to convince our clients about our services but once the ball got rolling, we didn’t look back.”
Today, ENVA has reinstated itself as one of the most trusted companies in the state offering sustainable, eco-friendly and low cost treatment solutions for water & municipal wastewater treatment, industrial effluent treatment, Biogas generation and recycle, recycle & reuse of treated wastewater/effluent. They also provide immediate on-site repair services for all types of water treatment systems besides undertaking repairs and routine maintenance visits. Samal and his team are also working upon solid or organic waste management systems and planning to launch their products early next year.
Earlier this year, the COVID-19 too had a debilitating impact on ENVA. Several projects were pushed into obscurity after the nationwide lockdown was imposed due to the pandemic. Displaying resilience and mental toughness, Samal and his team picked up the pieces soon after the difficult phase. “Be it a global pandemic or any unforeseen incident, one should be prepared to bravely face it and start afresh,” said Samal, who has installed water treatment units at few hospitals and government-aided schools as part of his company’s CSR activities.
Elaborating on the importance of water and wastewater treatment, Samal says, “Our water sources are being alarmingly polluted due to the industrial, commercial and household wastes. That day is not far away when the whole world will be reeling under the water crisis. Thus, there is a strong need to treat the wastewater or effluent to reduce the toxic impact on the environment and human health. By doing so, we can not only recover certain valuable materials but also composting and recycling can be done easily thereby reducing the over-dependence of water. The government should impose stringent laws on wastewater treatment in the interest of the environment and human health. Most importantly, community participation is vital in this regard.”
Outside of work, Samal takes keen interest in reading novels, travelling and spending quality time with family. Currently, Samal is mulling to set up a dedicated workshop for manufacturing of equipment in Bhubaneswar. Besides, there are plans to spread their wings to other Indian states and become the market leader in the near future.
