The arising Evolution for Railways during the pandemic, the next generation Mobile Train Radio Communication system decided to cater to the traffic data needs of Indian Railways.
This would also ensure passenger safety while travelling.
The Research Designs and Standards Organisation, the R&D arm of railways, has been tasked to deploy with designing a uniform with cost-effective as well as an integrated system in order to roll out LTE-R over 30,000-route km of the rail network.
According to sources in the railways, LTE-R has also considered for Mission Critical Passenger Safety Services & Applications, Video Surveillance System through closed-circuit television cameras in trains and the Passenger Information System and Internet of Things on rolling stocks and the fixed assets.
The Indian railways roped in institutions such as IITs of Chennai, Roorkee and Kharagpur and University of Mumbai for a mission to use advanced technology, including MTRC and Artificial Intelligence, so as to predict failures in signalling the assets and enhance reliability of the installed signalling system.
As an advisory given to all the Zonal Railways, the Board has called for cutting costs on housekeeping activities in the trains and at stations with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an earlier order, the Railway Board wanted the Zonal Railways to review the cleaning contracts in view of pandemic and even suggested that they look for sponsorship with suitable branding of trains/stations and use the Corporate Social Responsibility funds for cleaning as a measure to save expenditure.
