According to the Odisha government, starting in January 2025, ration card holders under food security programs would also receive wheat. The state has already received wheat for this purpose, according to Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra, who said on Thursday that distribution will start in the first week of January when certain procedures are finished.
According to Minister Patra, districts have been asked for data in order to determine the recipients’ preference for wheat over rice. Through the Public Distribution System (PDS), some recipients have chosen to receive solely rice, while others have asked for wheat. The government will complete a tender and start distribution in accordance with their preferences. The Minister said that, with around 85% of e-KYC work now finished, the procedure could take longer than expected. The remaining e-KYC work is anticipated to be finished in 15 days, and over 1.6 million ineligible beneficiaries have been detected.
After the BJP took control of the state, the decision was made to give ration card holders wheat in addition to rice.
