Ravi Kumar S: Leading Cognizant into the AI Future with Vision and Purpose

FEATURE: Ravi Kumar S has emerged as a transformative leader in the global technology landscape, steering Cognizant through the complexities of the AI era with a vision rooted in innovation, inclusivity, and societal advancement. His journey from a nuclear scientist at India’s Bhabha Atomic Research Center to the helm of a multinational IT powerhouse epitomizes a commitment to leveraging technology for broader human progress.

Appointed as CEO of Cognizant in January 2023, Kumar brought with him over two decades of experience in technology consulting, having previously served as President at Infosys. His leadership at Cognizant has been marked by a strategic emphasis on integrating artificial intelligence across the company’s operations and offerings. Recognizing AI as a “double engine of transformation,” Kumar has championed its dual role in enhancing internal efficiencies and delivering cutting-edge solutions to clients.

Under his guidance, Cognizant launched the Synapse initiative in 2024, aiming to train one million individuals globally in emerging technologies by 2026, with a significant focus on AI and India. This ambitious program underscores Kumar’s belief in the democratization of technology and the importance of equipping the workforce with skills for the future. By early 2025, the initiative had already trained over 400,000 people, reflecting its rapid progress and widespread impact.

Kumar’s vision extends beyond corporate boundaries. He has been a vocal advocate for the role of AI in reshaping the job market, asserting that while certain roles may evolve, AI will ultimately create more opportunities than it displaces. He envisions AI as an equalizer, breaking down barriers to employment and fostering greater inclusivity in the workforce. This perspective aligns with his broader commitment to social and economic mobility, particularly through education and upskilling initiatives.

Cognizant’s internal operations have also undergone significant transformation under Kumar’s leadership. The company has infused generative AI into its core offerings, developing tools like AI-powered virtual assistants to enhance productivity and client experiences. Internally, AI has been leveraged to automate aspects of software development, with machines contributing to approximately 20% of the code written, thereby increasing efficiency and allowing human developers to focus on more complex tasks.

Kumar’s influence extends to policy and industry advocacy. In December 2024, he was appointed Chair of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Artificial Intelligence Working Group, where he leads efforts to educate policymakers and the public about AI’s potential and to advocate for policies that support responsible innovation. His role signifies a recognition of his expertise and leadership in navigating the ethical and practical challenges posed by rapid technological advancement.

In recognition of his contributions, Kumar was honored with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award in January 2025, the highest accolade conferred by the Indian government on overseas Indians. The award acknowledged his efforts in strengthening India’s position in the global digital economy and his commitment to fostering innovation and talent development.

Kumar’s tenure at Cognizant reflects a holistic approach to leadership, one that balances technological advancement with a deep sense of social responsibility. His initiatives have not only propelled Cognizant to the forefront of AI integration but have also set a precedent for how technology companies can contribute to societal progress. Through strategic investments, inclusive policies, and a forward-thinking mindset, Ravi Kumar S continues to shape a future where technology serves as a catalyst for widespread human development.
