For the rehabilitation of Transgender for the creation of a beggar home, the Department of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD) gave permission for the built-up.
According to the official report, Municipal Commissioner Prem Chandra Chaudhary informed that the beggar home will have 50-bed capacities and a request for proposal (RFP) for the same will be drifted soon to select the service providing agency.
Under the inclusive development strategy by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), this is another step for the development of the capital city by accompanying the endorsement of three special homes for Women and Children, Physical and mentally challenged and elderly beggars.
Deputy Commissioner Kamala Kanta Behera also concerned that while the selection of agencies for these three 100 bedded homes are over, this is another development of the ULB. Beggar free initiative is in process and many times the city authority along with Commissionerate Police and civil society organisations have rescued beggars from different places. Beggary on the roadside has been prevented and the Ram Mandir site is beggar free presently.
Transgender is a special category and many of these gender is discovered functioning beggary that could be accomplished to live on their own. This TG rehabilitation home is a preliminary step by BMC which is the first of its kind in Odisha.
On 15th April 2014, the Honorable Supreme Court of India declared transgender as the third gender in India. And BMC is approved to have a special home for the category. Citizens’ cooperation will help improve such comprehensive development initiative in Bhubaneswar.
BMC has already taken steps of including the transgender community in different activities like holding tax collection, managing parking lots which are the indicators of development initiatives taken for the category.
