The Corporate Magnate: Abhijit Pati

Abhijit Pati has been a name to reckon with the Aluminium industry for the past three decades. He joins Balco after an appreciable stint as Chief Executive Officer of Vedanta Limited, Jharsuguda. Born on 1st January 1964, Abhijit Pati has a humble family background, from where he rose to the pinnacle of academic excellence and professional success. He has a distinguished career spanning more than 30 years in the Aluminium industry and has a wealth of experience.

Alumni of Calcutta University, Mr. Abhijit Pati, started his career as an engineer with Indian Aluminium Company (a subsidiary of ALCAN, a major Canadian aluminum Producer) in 1989. Later joined INDAL/HINDALCO, Hirakud, under the flagship of Aditya Birla Group of Industries, and established him as a frontline leader. In his early years as a professional, he received the prestigious British Sword of Honour for the Hirakud Smelter in 1999 and the Group Chairman Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla’s “Exceptional Contributor Award” for his significant role in the turnaround story of the Hirakud Aluminum Smelter in 2006.

He served the group’s aspiration as Vice President until 2008, when he was offered the position of Chief Operating Officer for leading one of the world’s largest Greenfield Aluminium cum Power complexes at Jharsuguda, Odisha, by the global natural resources giant and conglomerate Vedanta Group. Subsequently, on March 16, 2015Mr, Pati was elevated to the coveted position of President and CEO of Vedanta Ltd.’s Aluminium business and headed the world’s largest single-location aluminum smelter at Jharsuguda for a little over four years.

Vedanta Ltd., Jharsuguda rose to prominence as a member of the exclusive “Million Tonne Club” of world producers of aluminum under his capable direction. He serves on the Senior Management Executive Committee of Vedanta’s global aspiration to become the industry leader in the field of natural resources. Additionally, he serves as the chairman of the Aluminium Association of India’s Governing Council (AAI).

Furthermore, he is a government-appointed representative of India for the Indo-Japanese collaboration on the PAT scheme for cooperation in the energy sector. Additionally, he has agreed to co-chair the FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) Odisha State Council. He has been nominated for a three-year term on the BPUT, Odisha, Board of Management.

Many Indian industrial and academic institutions have acknowledged and highly valued Mr. Pati’s contributions to the aluminum industry. He received the “Technological Excellence Award 2016” at the 20th National Conference on Non-Ferrous Minerals & Metals for his essential role as a frontline leader in the turnaround and expansion of several national aluminum production centers. His knowledge and years of experience with major metal-based corporate organizations made this possible.

He was sentenced twice as the ‘India Affairs Professional CEO of the year at the 8th and 9thAnnual India Leadership Conclave and Indian Affairs Business Leadership Awards. In addition, at the 3rd Corporate Excellence Award organized by Odisha Cultural Foundation, Mr. Pati was awarded ‘Best CEO of the Year in 2017 for his efforts in driving an aluminum revolution in India as the CEO of Vedanta Ltd., Jharsuguda&‘Best CEO of the Year in 2019 as the CEO of Bharat Aluminium Co. Ltd. and he has been awarded The Economic Times ‘Most Promising Business Leaders of Asia 20-21’, where his professional acumen and leadership have resulted in nurturing one of the largest primary producers of aluminum.

Mr. Pati is a Gold Medalist from prestigious institutes like Calcutta University and International Management Institute, New Delhi. He is a first-class honors Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering and an MBA. He is an active member of large numbers of aluminum associations nationally and globally.
