Investigating the ration distribution scam, the central investigating agency believes Shahjahan used the money from the crime to invest in illicit fish farms in Sandeshkhali.In relation to the alleged multi-crore ration distribution scam in West Bengal, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday questioned Sheikh Shahjahan, the strongman of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), who had been arrested, in the Basirhat correctional home in North 24 Parganas, sources said.
“To question Shahjahan, an ED team went to the jail facility. Permission was granted by the court, an official stated.Shahjahan allegedly used the money from the ration distribution scheme to invest in illicit fish farms in Sandeshkhali, according to the central investigating body looking into the case. The ED claims that hundreds of acres of farmlands were taken by force and converted into fish farms.Regarding the ration scam, the ED detained Jyoti Priya Mallick, the former state food minister, in October 2023. He’s currently incarcerated.
When ED officers went to search Shahjahan’s home in Sandeshkhali on January 5, they were ambushed. For fifty-five days, the TMC leader evaded capture. Shahjahan is believed to be Mallick’s close assistant.Sandeshkhali, a village in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, has been in the news since February 7 when the ladies of the village staged a protest, calling for the arrest of Shahjahan and his associates on charges of rape and stealing land. His close accomplices Uttam Sardar and Shibaprasad Hazra had earlier been taken into custody by the Bengal Police.
