Shilpi Ashok Sahoo’s early life was steeped in the tranquil beauty of his village. His move to Bhubaneswar marked a pivotal shift in his journey. It was here that he began his foray into the world of stone art, profoundly inspired by his father, an artist himself. “My father was my initial inspiration,” Sahoo reflects. His formative training began near Kalpana Square in Bhubaneswar in 1978, where he immersed himself in learning from seasoned artists. This period of intense self-teaching laid the foundation for what would become a remarkable career.
A Legacy of Mentorship
Today, Sahoo’s influence extends far beyond his own creations. He oversees a vast network of 65 workshops across Odisha, guiding a dedicated team of 100-150 artisans directly and impacting the lives of approximately 1,400 individuals indirectly. “My artists are my family,” Sahoo says with pride. His commitment to nurturing talent is evident in his active role in teaching and mentoring, ensuring that his legacy will continue through his son and the many artists he has trained.

His work adorns the Akshardham Temple in Gujarat, Sankha Bhawan in Odisha, and Krushi Bhawan, and extends to international landmarks, including a notable project in Bali, Indonesia. His association with Biju Patnaik, who personally invited him to Bali, remains a cherished chapter in his career. These contributions not only highlight his skill but also his ability to blend traditional artistry with contemporary demands.

Despite this, Sahoo remains hopeful, driven by his belief in the transformative power of art.
