Shri Brijendra Pratap Singh: Spearheading NALCO’s Growth in a Changing Global Economy

FEATURE: In the heart of India’s industrial revolution stands a man whose vision and leadership have redefined the nation’s aluminium sector. Shri Brijendra Pratap Singh, the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), is a name that resonates with excellence, innovation, and an unshakable commitment to progress. His journey is not just a tale of professional success but a reflection of the power of determination and strategic thinking in transforming an industry.

Born with an innate curiosity for engineering and problem-solving, Shri Brijendra Pratap Singh pursued his education in Mining Machinery Engineering from the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dhanbad, formerly known as the Indian School of Mines. With an additional MBA in Marketing, he seamlessly blended technical expertise with business acumen. His career began in 1989 at the Iron Ore Mine of Bhilai Steel Plant, where he quickly earned a reputation for his meticulous approach to operations. Over the years, his journey took him through various leadership roles at SAIL’s major steel plants, including Bhilai, Bokaro, Durgapur, and IISCO. Before taking the reins at NALCO, he served as the Director-in-Charge of Burnpur and Durgapur Steel Plants and was a board member of SAIL, shaping policies that influenced the broader mining and metal industry in India.

When Shri Singh assumed the leadership of NALCO, he inherited a legacy of excellence but also faced an industry that demanded constant evolution. The global aluminium market was shifting, competition was fierce, and efficiency was the need of the hour. Under his guidance, NALCO embarked on an unprecedented growth trajectory, achieving record-breaking financial success. The third quarter of FY25 saw the company’s net profit skyrocket to Rs.1,583 crore—three times the profit recorded in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The revenue from operations surged to Rs.11,520 crore in the first nine months of FY25, reflecting an impressive 20% growth.

But numbers alone do not define a leader. Shri Singh’s approach to success lies in his unwavering focus on operational efficiency, cost optimization, and strategic expansion. He introduced key measures to enhance process efficiency, reduce input costs, and improve product quality, ensuring that NALCO remained a market leader in alumina and aluminium production. With his foresight, he spearheaded crucial expansion projects, including the 5th Stream expansion of the Refinery, operationalization of Pottangi Mines, the Brownfield expansion of the Smelter Plant, and the planned CPP expansion. His emphasis on utilizing captive coal and optimizing raw material costs further strengthened NALCO’s financial standing. Additionally, he implemented sustainable practices, ensuring that NALCO not only grew economically but also reduced its environmental footprint, aligning the company’s objectives with global green energy initiatives.

Beyond operational success, Shri Singh is a leader who values relationships and collaboration. At the All India Customer Meet 2025, held in Bhubaneswar, he reinforced his belief in transparent business practices and the importance of customer engagement. The event, themed ‘Transforming Aluminium Together – Today, Tomorrow & Beyond,’ brought together key stakeholders, policymakers, and industry experts. Shri Singh, alongside other dignitaries from NALCO and the Indian Railways, called upon industry leaders to share their insights, ensuring that NALCO remained attuned to market demands and customer needs. The meet was not just about discussions; it was a celebration of partnerships, with long-standing business allies being felicitated for their continued trust in NALCO’s vision.

Shri Singh’s leadership is deeply aligned with India’s broader vision for economic development. His commitment to aluminium as a strategic metal is rooted in the belief that it will play a critical role in the nation’s infrastructural transformation, especially in achieving the goals of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047.’ Under his guidance, NALCO has emerged as a key player in this national mission, driving initiatives that contribute to India’s self-reliance and industrial strength. He has actively worked towards policy advocacy, engaging with government bodies to facilitate a more robust aluminium sector that can compete on the global stage. His strategic vision ensures that NALCO is not just keeping pace with industry trends but setting new benchmarks in innovation and industrial growth.

His leadership style is defined by an ability to balance long-term vision with immediate action. While he focuses on expanding NALCO’s reach and market dominance, he also prioritizes workforce development. His initiatives in employee training and skill enhancement programs have played a crucial role in improving productivity and fostering a culture of excellence within the company. Under his guidance, NALCO employees have benefited from exposure to best industry practices and cutting-edge technology, ensuring that the company’s human capital remains one of its greatest assets.
