Born on June 20, 1958, in Uparbeda, a small village nestled in the tribal heartland of Mayurbhanj, Odisha, Draupadi Murmu’s upbringing was marked by both humble means and profound determination. Part of the Santhal community, she grew up in a close-knit environment that instilled in her a sense of resilience and purpose. At a time when opportunities for women, especially tribal women, were scarce, Murmu’s pursuit of education was both a pioneering and transformative step. She went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rama Devi Women’s College in Bhubaneswar, becoming one of the few women from her village to achieve this milestone.
Murmu’s career began with a role as a junior assistant in the Odisha government’s Irrigation Department, followed by work as a school teacher in Rairangpur. Her first significant leap into public life came in 1997 when she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Shortly afterward, she was elected to serve as a councilor in Rairangpur and subsequently became Chairperson of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat, marking her initial foray into leadership. During this period, she held roles in several ministries, including Commerce, Transport, Fisheries, and Animal Resources.
