Soma Mondal Becomes SAIL’s First Woman Chairperson

Soma Mondal, the Director (Commercial) of SAIL, has taken over as the Chairman of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).
Soma Mondal graduated in Electrical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, in 1984. She started her career as a Graduate Engineer Trainee at NALCO and rose to become Director (Commercial) at the company. Later in 2017, she joined SAIL as the Director Commercial. Before joining SAIL, she was the Director (Commercial) at a fellow Central public sector enterprise, National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO).
As per the reports, she said, “There’s a little bit of SAIL in everybody’s life is an apt description of SAIL’s importance as a trusted steel maker to the nation… People are its greatest strength, and with the synergized efforts of the entire Team, SAIL, we will strive to attain a higher summit. Our immediate focus is to improve the top-line and the bottom-line of the company. The first target is to improve the financial performance of SAIL.”

She further said, “Our immediate focus is to improve the top-line and the bottom-line of the company. We are charting out all strategies to improve value for all our stakeholders and make it structurally stronger.”
According to the company statement, Mondal was instrumental in introducing new marketing strategies and products at SAIL, enriching the company’s product basket. The company launched niche branded products like NEX (Structural) and SAIL SeQR (TMT bars) under her leadership.
As per Financial Express Report, Jayanta Roy, senior vice-president, ICRA, stated – “With the domestic steel capacity is likely to double over the next decade, as per the government’s 300 MT capacity target set SAIL to has set a proportionate target for itself. The challenge, however, would be to strike a balance between funding the large expansion and maintaining a conservative capital structure.”
