According to the Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), six of the 42 sunstroke deaths that were reported on May 30 had been confirmed as of Sunday. Six more people died from causes other than sunstroke.
The District Collectors have reported 99 suspected sunstroke mortality cases in the last 72 hours, according to an official SRC communiqué released on Sunday. Twenty of the 99 reported cases have been verified by the District Collectors based on the joint investigation and post-mortem findings. Simultaneously, it has been verified that two of the purported complaints did not result from sunstroke.
“As cumulative, during this summer a total of 141 alleged sunstroke death cases have been reported by the District Collectors of which it was confirmed that 26 cases were due to sunstroke, while eight deaths were due to other reasons,” the release read.
There are currently 107 reported instances that the District Collectors are looking into.
