Five Indians Rescued After Kuwait-Flagged Tanker MT Kazimah III Is Hit in Strait of Hormuz
Five Indian nationals have been safely rescued after the Kuwait-flagged crude oil tanker MT Kazimah III was struck by a projectile while travelling through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Indian Embassy in Muscat said it coordinated the rescue operation and confirmed that all five Indian nationals were brought ashore safely. The mission also thanked the Omani authorities for their assistance.
The incident occurred against the backdrop of heightened security concerns around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime passages. The waterway connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is a major route for international energy shipments.
The tanker, MT Kazimah III, is sailing under the Kuwaiti flag and was reportedly travelling towards Lomé, Togo. Reports identified the five rescued people as Indian nationals working aboard the vessel.
The Indian Embassy’s statement was notably focused on the safety of the Indian nationals rather than assigning responsibility for the projectile strike. At present, reports establish that the vessel was struck and that the five Indians were safely evacuated, but the available official statements do not establish who fired the projectile or the precise circumstances behind the incident.
The rescue is particularly significant for India because thousands of Indian seafarers work on commercial vessels operating across the Gulf and surrounding maritime routes. Any escalation in the security situation around Hormuz can therefore have direct implications for Indian nationals working at sea.
The Strait is also critical to the global energy system because a substantial proportion of internationally traded oil and petroleum products passes through the region. Any prolonged disruption can therefore affect shipping, insurance costs, energy markets and international trade.
Indian authorities are continuing to monitor the safety of Indian citizens and seafarers in the region. For now, the most important confirmed development is that the five Indian nationals aboard MT Kazimah III have been rescued and safely brought ashore.
