Sunstroke Claims One Life, 89 Hospitalized So Far In Odisha

As many as eighty-nine people have been hospitalized to various hospitals throughout the state of Odisha due to sunstroke, with the state reeling from extreme heatwave conditions. They are receiving care at a number of state-run facilities, Public Health Director Niranjan Mishra said on Monday. There has only been one sunstroke death in the state to date, in addition to 89 hospitalized instances. Of the 89 hospitalized cases, seven came from Mayurbhanj, seven from Jharsuguda, five from Sambalpur, twelve from Khurda, nine from Angul, and 41 from Sundargarh.

Seven of the twelve sunstroke patients that have been reported from Khurda are being treated at Capital Hospital. According to Mishra, the Health Department has not verified the claims regarding an increased number of heat stroke deaths. It is important to note that on April 15, Laxmikanta Sahu, 62, of Maheshpur in the Balasore district passed away from a sunstroke. According to a representative of the Special Relief Commissioner’s office, this was the first sunstroke death of the summer.
