After the university chose to proceed with the annual convocation on December 24, CV Ananda Bose removed interim vice-chancellor Buddhadeb Sau; however, Sau was later reinstated by the state government. As chancellor of all state-run universities, West Bengal governor CV Ananda Bose is expected to file a lawsuit in the Calcutta high court against Jadavpur University for holding its annual convocation on Sunday in defiance of his objections. An anonymous Raj Bhavan source stated, “The chancellor has received legal advice to move a writ of quo warranto in the Calcutta high court against the unauthorised convocation in Jadavpur University.” The right of an individual to hold public office can be contested via a writ of quo warranto.
Bose dismissed interim vice-chancellor Buddhadeb Sau on Saturday after university administrators chose to proceed with the annual convocation on December 24 in defiance of the chancellor’s protests. He was promptly put back in by the state administration. On Sunday, the convocation took place. The pro-vice-chancellor was given authority by Sau, and it was they who oversaw the ceremony and gave the students their degrees. The Sau gave out the degree diplomas.
Along with calling an emergency meeting of the state’s acting vice chancellors of institutions, the chancellor also established a task group to continue talks with the higher education authority.Earlier, Raj Bhavan had issued a warning that it would launch an investigation into Sau and added that it was getting legal advice on whether or not the costs of the unlawful convocation may be taken out of his pay.
