Ambassador is slated to return in a new incarnation in the next two years. The Ambassador will be introduced with a new engine and design by Hindustan Motor Financial Corporation of India (HMFCI), an affiliate firm of the CK Birla Group. According to Reuters, the new Ambassador would be built at Hindustan Motors’ Chennai plant. Hindustan Motors and Peugeot are developing the engine and design for the new ‘Amby,’ which will go on sale in 2024.Hindustan Motors based the Ambassador on the Morris Oxford (Series III). In India, the automobile was a huge success. In fact, it was the best-selling automobile for more than three decades. Until the middle of the 1990s, the Ambassador served as a prestige symbol. However, with the introduction of newer and more sophisticated vehicles, its sales fell precipitously. In the mid-1980s, the Ambassador sold 20,000 units per year. By 2014, sales had dropped to 2,000 units. As a result, Hindustan Motors halted manufacturing, blaming its massive debt and a lack of demand.
