On August 20, 2022, a special CBI court in Asansol denied Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal’s bail application in the alleged cattle smuggling scam and extended his custody with the central agency for four days until August 24. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) requested an extension of Mr. Mondal’s custody, claiming that he could “influence witnesses and tamper with evidence if granted bail.” Despite being served with summonses ten times, Mr. Mondal has been “uncooperative from the beginning,” according to the CBI lawyer. The lawyer also claimed that Mr. Mondal forced a doctor to prescribe “complete rest.”The CBI arrested Mr. Mondal on August 11 in connection with its investigation into the alleged cattle.
