In order to broker a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine, Mexico has proposed to the UN the formation of a committee that would include Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pope Francis, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. At the Security Council’s briefing on impunity in Ukraine, Ebrard stated, “The purpose would be quite clear, producing new methods for conversation and providing more spaces for mediation, which develop trust, reduce tension and pave the route towards sustainable peace.”
The proposal made by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Friday during his Independence Day speech was delivered by him to the Council. In his speech, Obrador urged the Modi-Francis-led group to “immediately seek a ceasefire of hostilities in Ukraine and the beginning of direct discussions” with Presidents Vladimir Putin of Russia and Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine.Casaubon stated that the Mexican delegation will continue with the necessary consultations to help generate widespread support for the committee, “whose formation we hope will proceed with the support of the UN member states that so decide,” as well as for the mediation efforts headed by the UN secretary-general.
