Trump Threatens New Tariffs on Nations Supporting ‘Anti-American’ BRICS Policies

Following strong criticism of the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran at the BRICS 2025 Summit, U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to nations aligning with what he termed “anti-American” BRICS policies. He announced plans to impose an additional 10% tariff on countries backing the bloc’s recent stances, with tariff letters for 12 nations “signed and ready” for issuance by Monday at 12 PM EST.

The BRICS Summit, held in Brazil and comprising 10 member states—Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa, and the UAE—condemned the U.S.-Israel airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear facilities, labeling them “illegal.”

In a joint declaration, BRICS nations denounced the “double standards” in global counter-terrorism, especially in the Global South. The statement strongly condemned the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, and emphasized zero tolerance for terrorism, cross-border terror movement, financing, and safe havens.

Indian PM Narendra Modi echoed the sentiment, highlighting the unequal global response to terrorism and the need for fairness in addressing violence in developing regions.

The declaration also took aim at “indiscriminate tariff hikes,” which, though not directly naming the U.S., was seen as a rebuke to Washington’s trade policy. It warned that such practices threaten to destabilize global trade and disrupt supply chains.

Amid ongoing backlash and the collapse of multiple trade agreements, Trump’s earlier hike in tariffs—announced on April 2—was temporarily paused for 90 days and extended until July 9. With the deadline looming, Trump appears poised to move forward with the tariff impositions, signaling a new phase of trade tensions.

BRICS also escalated its rhetoric on the ongoing Gaza conflict, condemning unilateral military actions and emphasizing the Global South’s growing opposition to Western-led interventions.
