Leh, August 13, 2026: Two moderate earthquakes struck Ladakh’s Leh region within around four hours on Thursday, causing concern among residents in the seismically active Himalayan territory.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the first and stronger earthquake measured 5.5 magnitude and struck at 6:05:15 am IST. The tremor occurred at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometres, with the epicentre located at 36.881°N latitude and 74.402°E longitude.
A second earthquake measuring 4.3 magnitude was recorded at approximately 9:54 am. Its epicentre was also in the Leh region, at a depth of around 10 kilometres.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage to property following either tremor. However, the shallow depth of the first earthquake meant that the shaking could be felt more strongly at the surface.
Ladakh lies in a seismically active part of the Himalayan region, making earthquake preparedness particularly important. Authorities are continuing to monitor the area for further seismic activity.
