UK Firm Plans 800-Acre Semiconductor Unit In Odisha Worth ₹ 2 Lakh Crore

According to authorities, a UK-based corporation intends to invest 30,000 crore in the first phase of the construction of a huge semiconductor production facility in Odisha’s Ganjam district. The project’s total cost is close to Rs. 2 lakh crore. On March 26, the state government and the Indian branch of the UK-based SRAM & MRAM Group, SRAM & Projects India Pvt Limited, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the establishment of the semiconductor factory in the state.

On Thursday, representatives from the Indian firm led by its chairman Guruji Kumaran Swami met with the district government in Chhatrapur after inspecting certain locations in the area around Chhatrapur. Investors have been promised all necessary facilities for setting up the plant by Ganjam Collector Dibya Jyoti Parida.

“We have visited some sites, including the industrial park of Tata and some private lands for the establishment of the proposed semiconductor unit. A technical team of the company will visit the district to finalise the site,” said Debadutt Singhdeo, project director of the firm.

To build the unit, the business needs up to 800 acres of land. Although company representatives also visited other districts, they chose the location near Chhatrapur because it is close to the Gopalpur port, has a designated industrial corridor, an airstrip, and a national highway, in addition to having access to clean water and energy, which are essential for the fabrication unit, according to sources who spoke to Press Trust of India.

“The company has aimed to establish the unit within two years and to provide direct employment to 5,000 people. It has also planned to expand the unit in subsequent phases by investing around ₹ 2 lakh crore by 2027,” said Mr Singhdeo.

Memory chips for use in mobile phones, televisions, computers, air conditioners, and ATMs will be produced by the semiconductor facility. Since the nation cannot produce enough semiconductors on its own, it imports over 3 lakh crore worth of semiconductors every year from various nations.
