If you thought an in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) pregnancy was practically amazing, a scientist has now developed an artificial womb to carry the pregnancy in a pod once the embryo has been fertilised in a lab. The first “Artificial Womb Facility” in the world now asserts that it can produce 30,000 children in a year in an artificial womb or “growth pod.” The fact that this facility doesn’t actually exist may be a relief to most people. EctoLife is a made-up facility that houses an artificial womb. They continued by asserting that this may aid countries with declining populations like South Korea, Bulgaria, and Japan.
The technology claims to allow parents to select a baby’s traits from a menu, such as eye colour, height, and strength. The CRISPR Cas-9 technology, which is not brand-new to the globe, will be used to carry out the gene editing.
Hashem Al-Ghaili, a biotechnologist and scientific communicator based in Berlin, is the brains behind this scheme at the womb factory known as ECTOLIFE. He claims it will enable infertile couples to produce a kid and make them the “real biological parents of their own offspring.”
“Just when I think I can no longer be astonished by anything in this insane world anymore,” one online user remarked in response to the report. Social media users questioned how many ethical standards were being tested by the concept of this facility.
