In response to a cargo train that crashed into the Kanchanjunga Express from behind on Monday in West Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri, at least five people were killed and thirty were injured. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is travelling to Darjeeling to investigate the scene of the tragedy. According to sources, the collision caused at least two of the Kanchanjunga Express’s bogies to derrail.
“The disaster has left 30 people injured and five travellers dead. This is a serious situation. The tragedy happened when a cargo train crashed with the Kanchenjunga Express, Darjeeling Police Additional SP Abhishek Roy told ANI.One of the biggest and busiest stations in the Northeast Frontier Railway zone in eastern and northeastern India, New Jalpaiguri station in north Bengal, was around 11 kilometres away from the scene of the disaster.The train was travelling from Agartala to Kolkata’s Sealdah station. The mishap happened at approximately 8:30 a.m.
A railway official stationed in NJP stated, “Rescue operations have started and injured passengers were being shifted to the hospital.”The next of kin of each deceased person involved in the West Bengal railway disaster would receive an ex-gratia payment of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF, according to announcements made by PM @narendramodi. The injured would get fifty thousand rupees.
