9 Killed, 29 Injured As 2 Trains Collide In Andhra

According to authorities, two trains in Andhra Pradesh collided on Sunday, killing nine people and injuring 29, months after a horrifying three-train collision in Odisha claimed the lives of over 280 people.Three coaches of the Vizag-Raigad passenger train derailed after they collided with a special passenger train traveling from Visakhapatnam to Palasa that was stopped on tracks between Alamanda and Kantakapalle near Kothsavatsala due to a lack of signal.

“According to the data, there are nine casualties and twenty-nine injuries,” East Coast Railway CPRO Biswajit Sahu stated.

Images taken at the scene showed the overturned coaches and the throng of people. According to railway sources, the loco pilot failed to notice the signal, which led to the tragedy. The Railways source also stated that the Delhi Railway Ministry’s war room is keeping an eye on the situation.

A statement issued by the East Coast Railway said: “Rescue operations are underway with DRM/Waltair (Divisional Railway Manager, Waltair division) and his team on the spot. The local administration is also helping in the rescue operation. Accident relief trains and other rescue equipment… have been engaged, and helpline numbers have been issued.”

Due to the accident, train services on the Chennai-Howrah routes were interrupted. On the route, several trains were cancelled or rerouted. According to a Railways official, the Railways has already started the process of distributing ex gratia amount. “Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 5 lakh to those injured,” the official said.
