The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said that a low-pressure area has formed over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea.
The low-pressure area may form a depression gradually and by May 10 it is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of East Central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, IMD Director-General Mritunjay Mahapatra said today.
Gradually, the cyclonic storm is likely to move north-northwestwards towards the east-central Bay of Bengal till May 11. Thereafter, it is likely to recurve gradually and move north-northeastwards towards the Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts.
The system will be named as Cyclone ‘Mocha’ if it intensifies into a cyclonic storm.
Mohapatra said that the IMD has not issued any warning for eastern states like Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu. However, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, as the sea is very rough.
The forecast is for the next five days and the IMD will provide regular updates every day. The point of the landfall of the cyclonic storm, its timing, and its intensity will be forecast later.
At the same time, the IMD said that the coastal states, especially Tamil Nadu, are likely to experience heavy rainfall. On the other hand, there will be a gradual rise in the day temperature in Odisha over the next few days.
