According to police, the victim’s mother told detectives that she recognised one of the perpetrators and had seen him earlier.On Friday, two unidentified individuals stormed into the home of a local BJP leader and shot him dead in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district. The victim was identified by police as Prasanta Basunia, general secretary of the BJP’s local committee in the Dinhata section of the district.
According to the family, Basunia was ready to eat lunch when two men burst into the house and shot him at close range. When he arrived at the Dinhata government hospital, he was confirmed dead.According to police, the victim’s mother told detectives that she recognised one of the perpetrators and had seen him earlier.On the condition of anonymity, an officer at Dinhata police station stated that police are investigating Basunia’s family and neighbours for leads.
The West Bengal BJP’s chief spokesperson, Samik Bhattacharya, said Basunia was murdered by criminals sent by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).”This is a political assassination.” Basunia was chosen to undermine the BJP’s organisation ahead of the panchayat elections. “The ruling party’s achievement is the criminalization of politics,” Bhattacharya stated. He provided no evidence to back up his claim.Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition, also pointed fingers at the TMC and urged that the investigation be turned over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Adhikari stated on Twitter that TMC leaders in the region were leaving the party and joining the BJP. “Three levels of the TMC Party’s leadership were shocked by this defection. “The reaction is this heinous political murder,” he explained.
