A recent survey found that approximately 12 scam emails or texts are sent to Indians every day. Concerningly, according to News18.com, 82% of Indians acknowledged to falling for or clicking on phony messages. Identification becomes more difficult because so many people (49%) find these messages credible and report that there are no typos or errors in them.
The scam messages, which are frequently presented as “authentic correspondence,” cause a great deal of worry and financial hardship. According to the survey, people who use smartphones spend an average of one hour and forty-five minutes a week confirming the legitimacy of messages.
The study considers how artificial intelligence (AI) is driving scam messages to become more sophisticated. It emphasizes how crucial it is to have AI-driven defense solutions in place to stop the growing number of scams using AI.
Scammers deceive people in five common ways. These are:
* You’ve won a prize!
* Info about a purchase the recipient didn’t make
* Missed delivery or delivery problem notification
* Amazon security alert, or notification messages regarding account updates
* Subscription updates for Netflix or other streaming services
About 90% of Indians admitted to receiving daily fake messages or scams via email and text, and 84% reported getting scam messages on social media.
The messages Indians believed the most were:
* You’ve won a prize!
* Info about purchase the recipient didn’t make
* Missed delivery or delivery problem notification
* Sign-in and location verification messages
Based on a survey of more than 7,000 adults in seven countries, including India, the McAfee 2023 Scam report was produced.
