“Unearthing More from Ore”- OMC

Benzfab Technologies: Pioneering Digital Transformation with Innovation

Odisha, a treasure trove of mineral wealth, stood as a latent powerhouse due to the capital-intensive nature of the mining industry during the early years of independence. In response to this untapped potential, the Odisha Mining Corporation Limited (OMC) emerged on the scene on May 16, 1956, as a joint venture between the Government of Odisha and the Government of India. The primary goal was to unlock the mineral riches of the state through exploration, extraction, and value addition. By November 17, 1961, OMC transitioned into a wholly state-owned corporation.

Fast forward six and a half decades, and OMC has metamorphosed into the fastest and one of the largest mining companies in India. What sets OMC apart is not just its mining prowess but also its pioneering role in comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainability practices. Recognized nationally for its outstanding contributions, OMC proudly wears the label of a “Gold” Category State Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), a 100% debt-free, profit-making entity – a testament to its impeccable management.

The vision of OMC extends beyond national borders, aspiring to be a world-class organization with mining at its core. Quality, productivity, profitability, customer satisfaction, and environmental sustainability are the pillars supporting this vision. The mission echoes a commitment to sustained productivity through safe practices, strict quality control, and innovation. OMC strives for efficient, cost-effective, and eco-friendly mining without compromising safety and pollution control norms, relying on a skilled and committed workforce.

OMC’s vision is to balance these pillars, ensuring that all aspects are taken into consideration. Safety is the top priority, followed by quality, productivity, profitability, customer satisfaction, and environmental sustainability. They strive to ensure that their operations are efficient and low in cost, while also being mindful of their environmental impact. To ensure successful operations, OMC is committed to continually assessing and improving their balance between safety, quality, productivity, profitability, customer satisfaction, and environmental sustainability.

In fulfilling its mission, OMC plays a crucial role in meeting the raw material demands of industries both within and outside Odisha. A noteworthy collaboration with Hindalco Industries exemplifies this, as the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed recently for long-term bauxite ore supply signals a commitment to mutual growth.

Financially, OMC’s contributions to the state coffers are substantial. In the 2022-23 financial year alone, the corporation paid a dividend of Rs 1,420 crore to the state government. The numbers tell a compelling story – 18 operational mines, 33.76 million tonnes of ore production in 2022-23 (a 15% growth), including 29.68 million tonnes of iron ore, three million tonnes of bauxite, and 1.08 million tonnes of chrome ore.

At the helm of this transformation is Balwant Singh, the Managing Director of OMC. Under his leadership, the corporation has embraced a global business excellence framework, with a commitment to EFQM implementation. Singh’s vision extends beyond ore production; he is diligently unlocking skill development opportunities within OMC. Collaborations with educational institutions and skill development organizations reflect his dedication to upskilling the workforce and ensuring OMC’s role as a global mining leader is sustained and impactful.

Overall, OMC has gone many notches higher on the sustainability index by deftly juggling high growth performance with the environment and community protection. It has evolved into a safe and sustainable mining metaphor with high stakes on customers and the environment. For OMC, profit counts but what counts many times over are the people and the planet that have sustained its operations. This is like a tree that has grown strong and tall, its roots firmly planted in the ground, its branches stretching high and wide, providing shade and shelter for birds, insects, and animals. The tree continues to grow, producing fruit, oxygen, and other benefits to the community, and its sustainability is ensured by its careful and nurturing care.
