Four significant irrigation projects totaling Rs 3,160 were introduced by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in the state. The Anandpur Barrage Project’s Haldia Dam and Baitarni Left Canal are now operational. The left Anandpur barrage canal, which stretches 28 km, connects the River Baitarni to the Salandi rivers. 2,221 hectares of land in the Hatadihi and Anandpur blocks of the Keonjhar district are helped to be irrigated by the project. Seven blocks in the Balasore district will see irrigation on up to 56,550 hectares of land during the Rabi season.
In addition, 50,000 hectares of land will be irrigated during the Rabi season using the water stored in Salandi Dam. Irrigation facilities will be installed on 1,08,771 hectares of agricultural land. The Subarnarekha Irrigation Project includes the Haldia Dam in a similar manner. 5,520 hectares of additional land can receive irrigation through Haldia Dam, bringing the total amount of irrigated land through the Project to 62,480 hectares thus far.
The Chief Minister also placed the cornerstone for the Khairi Bandhan barrage and the second phase of the Subarnarekha irrigation project. The second phase of the Subarnarekha Irrigation Project will provide irrigation to up to 39,694 hectares of agricultural land in the districts of Mayurbhanj and Balasore. Similarly, in the Mayurbhanj district, barrage construction will begin on the Khairi Bandhan River close to Amlabani village. This will supply drinking water to 35,000 people and irrigation facilities to 6,950 hectares of agricultural land spread over three blocks.
