Live updates for the 2024 Pakistani election All eyes are on former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who was back home in October of last year after a trip to the UK and has the potential to lead again.Voting for Pakistan’s 12th general election began at 8 a.m. local time (8:30 a.m. IST) on Thursday. In the 336-seat National Assembly, the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif is predicted to hold the largest share of seats. Bilawal Bhutto’s Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is predicted to come in a distant second, followed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of former prime minister Imran Khan, a jailed politician, and former cricket player.

In the 336-member National Assembly, 266 seats are up for election; the remaining 70 seats are designated for women and non-Muslims.Approximately 13 million (13 crore) Pakistanis, or over half of the country’s population (241 million/24.1 crore), are able to cast ballots.After returning to Pakistan from the UK in October 2023, Nawaz Sharif would hold the position of prime minister for a record-breaking fourth time if the PML (N) becomes victorious or becomes the only major party.
