Mamata Mohanta Resigns From Rajya Sabha, Quits BJD

Mamata Mohanta, a BJD MP, announced today that she is leaving the Upper House and that she is no longer a primary member of the party, stating that the party no longer needs her services. She submitted her resignation letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, who accepted it immediately, after she was elected from the BJD to the Rajya Sabha in 2020.

Dhankhar also informed the Upper House regarding the resignation of Mohanta. “I have to inform the members that I have received a letter today from honrable member Smt Mamata Mohanta, represneting the State of Odisha resigning her seat in the Rajya Sabha. She has resigned her seat by writing to the chairman. I find the same to be constitutionally in order. I have accepted the resignation of Smt Mamata Mohanta, member repressing the State of Odisha with immediate effect.”

In her resignation letter, she mentioned “I have taken this decision consciously”. I feel that there is no requirement of the services of myself as well as my community in the Biju Janata Dal. Therefore, I have taken this hard decision in the public interest,” Mohanta wrote.

Additionally, the well-liked head of the Mayurbhanj Kudumi community resigned from the BJD’s primary membership. Mohanta wrote to BJD president Naveen Patnaik expressing her belief that her services were no longer needed within the party. It was planned for Mohanta’s term in the Rajya Sabha to expire in April 2026.
