The Steel Strategist: Mr. Alok Verma

Director-in-Charge, Rourkela Steel Plant

FEATURE: When Mr. Alok Verma took charge as the Director In-Charge of SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant on January 13, 2025, it marked not just a new chapter in the plant’s journey but also a crowning moment in a life dedicated to steel, strategy, and service. His journey from a young mechanical engineering graduate to the helm of one of India’s most vital steel plants is a story of quiet determination, transformative leadership, and an unwavering commitment to progress.

A graduate in Mechanical Engineering from BIT Sindri under Ranchi University, Mr. Verma began his career in 1991 at the Bokaro Steel Plant as a Management Trainee (Technical). What followed was a remarkable 32-year association with the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), shaped by challenges he turned into opportunities and innovations that left a lasting impact. At Bokaro, he rose steadily through the ranks, known for his meticulous approach and deep understanding of plant operations. He played a key role in the successful execution of major rolling mill projects in 1997, 2007, 2015, and 2023—each of which contributed significantly to enhancing production capabilities and technological upgradation.

Not one to be limited by routine, Mr. Verma became a certified Six Sigma Black Belt and spearheaded several pioneering initiatives including ERP implementation, the patenting of a technical design in hot rolling coiling operations, and the development of three new products that brought significant value to SAIL’s product portfolio. His analytical acumen also saw him working closely with the business analytics division to optimize product mix strategies, anticipate market trends, and recommend strategic investments aligned with long-term goals.

In July 2023, Mr. Verma was elevated to the post of Executive Director and was entrusted with overseeing the Mines of Rourkela Steel Plant. In this role, he played a pivotal role in integrating the newly constituted Odisha Group of Mines with the Rourkela unit. Under his leadership, manganese mining resumed in Bolani after a hiatus of nearly four decades, and the Odisha mines achieved a record production of 14.30 million tonnes of iron ore in the fiscal year 2023–24. Mr. Verma also oversaw the dispatch of dump fines from Bolani and tailings from Barsua to external agencies for pellet conversion, along with the installation and commissioning of a tertiary crusher for oversize lump control—initiatives that underscored his hands-on and visionary leadership.

On September 30, 2024, Mr. Verma assumed additional responsibilities as Executive Director (Works) and soon after, on November 15, 2024, he became ED In-Charge (Works) of Rourkela Steel Plant. These crucial roles laid the foundation for his eventual rise to Director In-Charge, where he now leads the plant with a focus on operational excellence, technological advancement, and sustainable growth.

What truly distinguishes Mr. Verma is not just his technical brilliance, but his leadership ethos—grounded in discipline, foresight, and a relentless drive for improvement. He has been an integral part of management teams that brought laurels to India by winning national and Asian championships in Management Business Simulation contests and participating in the global competition. A widely travelled technocrat, Mr. Verma has visited Germany, France, Italy, Austria, and China, gaining valuable insights from some of the world’s leading steel industries to infuse global best practices into Indian operations.

Mr. Alok Verma’s professional journey reflects a legacy of vision, perseverance, and purpose. As he steers Rourkela Steel Plant toward a future defined by innovation and excellence, his leadership continues to inspire not just the plant workforce but also the broader industrial ecosystem of the country. With his steady hand at the wheel, the future of RSP gleams as bright as the steel it produces.
