India on Saturday achieved a major milestone in its defence capabilities with the successful maiden flight tests of the indigenously developed Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS). The trials were conducted off the coast of Odisha at around 12:30 pm on August 23, 2025, officials confirmed.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the achievement on X, congratulating the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Armed Forces, and the Indian defence industry. “The @DRDO_India has successfully conducted the maiden flight tests of Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS) on 23 Aug 2025 at around 1230 Hrs off the coast of Odisha. I congratulate DRDO, India Armed Forces and Industry for this successful development,” he posted.
DRDO also released a video of the test, describing IADWS as a multi-layered air defence system integrating three advanced indigenous technologies — the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM), the Advanced Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS), and a high-power laser-based Directed Energy Weapon (DEW). Together, these systems are designed to provide a comprehensive shield against a wide range of aerial threats, from drones to high-speed aircraft and missiles.
Officials hailed the test as a landmark step towards self-reliance in defence technology, underscoring India’s growing capabilities in advanced air defence. Singh added that the trials have “established the multi-layered air-defence capability of our country and will significantly strengthen protection for key facilities against enemy aerial threats.”
