Heatwave, Warm Nights Return To Odisha; Temp May Soar To 45°C

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Friday that the daytime temperature is expected to increase by 2-3°C during the next 24 hours due to the return of the heatwave to Odisha. The lunchtime report predicts that over the following seven days, the state will likely have intense heat, humid weather, and warm evenings with thunderstorm activity.

Balangir, Kalahandi, and Sambalpur on April 17; Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Balangir, Kalahandi, and Sambalpur on April 18; Sundargarh, Nuapada, Jharsuguda, Balangir, Kalahandi, and Sambalpur on April 19; and Sundargarh, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Jharsuguda, Balangir, Kalahandi, and Sambalpur on April 20. During this time, temperatures in numerous areas of western Odisha, such as Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Titlagarh in Balangir, may reach 45°C.

Up to April 22, isolated areas in the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati may continue to have hot and muggy weather. Additionally, the IMD has issued a warning of warm evenings in Sundargarh, Balangir, and Sambalpur from April 18–20, as well as in Balangir and Sambalpur on April 17.

The state may anticipate some respite from the oppressive heat thanks to thunderstorm activity. On April 17, the weather service has forecast thunderstorms with lightning and strong surface winds (40–50 kmph) in one or two locations in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, and Balasore. A few locations in Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Balangir, Kalahandi, Rayagada, and Koraput may also experience similar weather with strong surface winds (30–40 kmph).
