This year Eid Al Adha celebrations will be in low-key amid the coronavirus pandemic. Even in Jama Masjid devotees were seen following all the necessary norms and guidelines by maintaining social distance.
Eid al Adha, or also known as Bakrid, is celebrated to commemorate Ibrahim’s devotion to God. It is also known as the ‘Feast of Sacrifice’ as according to legend, when Ibrahim willingly sacrificed his son Ismael as an act of obedience to God’s command, Allah sent the Gabriel to place a sheep in place of Ismael. Gabriel said to Ibrahim that Allah was happy with his selfless devotion and sent the sheep to be sacrificed instead of his son.
The custom of consecrating a sheep or a goat and preparing a meal and celebrating has been practised by every Muslim since then. And one portion of the cooked meat is distributed among the poor, the other is kept for the family, and the third is given to the relatives.
Every year many Muslim devotees offer namaz at Delhi’s Jama Masjid on Eid al Adha. But this year, due to the Coronavirus pandemic the government has prevented any social gathering from evading the spread of the virus and asked the people to celebrate this festival in a low-key.
Proper precautions like social distancing and adequate security are maintained in Jama Masjid. Even thermal checking with thermometer gun of people entering the Masjid was a witness as a precautionary measure. The police have made sure of a safe environment for the devotees. All the necessary arrangement for the protection of people was ensured in all small and big Mazid.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his greetings to the country on this occasion. He tweeted “Eid Mubarak! Greetings on Eid al-Adha. May this day inspire us to create a just, harmonious and inclusive society. May the spirit of brotherhood and compassion be furthered,”
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Chief Minister of Manipur N Biren Shah and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik were some of the early ones who wished people on social media.
