2021 was a year of cyclone for Odisha. While cyclone YAAS had a huge impact in the state, two other cyclones JAWAD and GULAB also had quite an impact in Odisha, even if they did not directly hit the state. However, even though cyclone had a huge impact in Odisha, the number one cause of disaster death in the state was not cyclone. Rather it was lightening that took the major lives in Odisha in 2021.
In 2021, lightening took 213 lives in Odisha. Not only it was highest in Odisha, it was the highest in India. Thereby Odisha was the number one state when it came to death by lightening struck. Moreover, as per the reports, there were retour official deaths related to cyclones and as per the same reports from the government, there were no official deaths related to floods in Odisha.
In the year 2021, India witnessed the loss of 787 lives due to this extreme weather event in 2021. Moreover, Odisha alone had accounted for a whopping 27 percent of the mortalities.
