Russia develops new Sputnik Vaccine for Omicron and Delta Variants

Sputnik V is currently authorised in 71 countries with a total population of more than 4 billion people, and Sputnik Light is authorised in more than 30 countries. On Tuesday, Russia’s Gamaleya National Research Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology and the Russian Direct Investment Fund announced the development of the Sputnik V vaccine, which is specifically adapted against coronavirus Delta and Omicron variants. According to the centre, the new version of Sputnik V has been Delta- and Omicron-adapted, as Omicron is currently the dominant variant worldwide. According to the company, this new version addresses the L-452-R mutation in the Omicron BA5 variant, which was not present in the BA1 variant.”When compared to those tailored against the combination of the original strain and the Omicron variant, the Delta and Omicron-adapted version of Sputnik V is the most promising version of the vaccine specifically adapted to new variants.” “The Sputnik V vaccine, which is adapted against the Delta and Omicron variants, significantly reduces viral load in the lungs of animals infected with the Omicron BA5 variant,” the Russian medical research institute said in a statement on Tuesday.A study conducted by a team of Russian scientists, including representatives from the City Clinical Hospital No. 67 named after L.A. Vorokhobov and the Gamaleya Center, found that Sputnik V’s efficacy against hospitalisation caused by Omicron was 97% and 99.4% against critical cases for those vaccinated with 3 or 4 components (re-vaccination with Sputnik Light or Sputnik V after Sputnik V). These findings will be published in the leading peer-reviewed medical journal Vaccines in June 2022.Sputnik V has become the most exported pharmaceutical product in Russian history, claiming to be one of the safest and most effective coronavirus vaccines in the world. Sputnik V is currently authorised in 71 countries with a total population of more than 4 billion people. More than 30 countries have approved Sputnik Light.
