In 2021–2022, the Odisha government collected Rs 55.14 crore in penalties from drivers who disobeyed traffic laws, especially by failing to wear helmets. Tukuni Sahu, the minister of commerce and transportation in the state of Odisha, responded in writing to a question from BJP MP Nityananda Gond of Umerkote, stating that a total of Rs 1483.79 crore had been collected in the State in 2021–2022 from road tax and other taxes and charges.
According to the Minister, out of the Rs 1483.79 crore in total income obtained in 2021–22, Rs 55.14 crore came from penalties levied against those who broke traffic laws, including those who failed to wear helmets while operating a motorbike.
