FEATURE: Not all contributions to society are made on grand stages or in public view—some unfold quietly, steadily, and with lasting impact. Dr. Sharmila Behera is one such figure whose journey through dentistry, education, and social service reflects a rare blend of dedication, humility, and purpose. A respected academic and clinician, she has spent decades not only healing patients but also shaping minds and strengthening communities.
Raised in Cuttack, Odisha, Dr. Behera’s academic journey began at Ravenshaw Girls High School and continued through Sailabala Women’s College. Her keen interest in science and commitment to meaningful service led her to pursue a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.D.S.) from the esteemed SCB Medical College. This foundation in clinical science marked the beginning of a career that would transcend traditional roles in dentistry.
Her early professional years began in the classrooms of Vinayak Mission Dental College, Bhubaneswar, where she joined the faculty and immersed herself in teaching and mentorship. However, her most defining role has been as a founding faculty member at Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS), under KIIT University. For years, she has remained a cornerstone of the institution—respected by colleagues, loved by students, and deeply committed to academic excellence. Her contributions have been recognised with her felicitation as a founder staff member and further accolades during institutional celebrations such as International Women’s Day.
Yet, Dr. Behera’s identity extends well beyond her professional titles. Her heart for service is evident through her deep involvement in social outreach. As an active member of the Rotary and Innerwheel Clubs in Puri, she has championed numerous community health initiatives, extending care to the underprivileged and participating in countless medical camps. Whether offering dental check-ups in remote areas or advocating preventive health practices, she brings both skill and empathy to every effort.
During the unprecedented challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Behera stood at the forefront of community service, offering her expertise and support when it was needed most. In recognition of her dedication, she was honoured with the Corona Warrior Award at Siddhagiri Ashram, Gobindpur, Tangi—an acknowledgment of her courage and compassion in a time of global crisis.
Her commitment to her profession and society has also earned her the Nariratna Puraskar from the World Odisha Society in New Delhi—an award reserved for women who make significant, inspiring contributions to their fields. These honours are more than tokens of achievement; they are symbols of a life lived in service to others.
In the personal sphere, Dr. Sharmila Behera is the spouse of Dr. Rabindra Narayan Behera, Member of Parliament from Jajpur. Together, they exemplify a life of public commitment—each contributing to the progress and well-being of Odisha through distinct but complementary paths. While her husband serves in the Parliament, Dr. Behera continues her work at the grassroots, nurturing the next generation of doctors and bringing care to the doorsteps of those often overlooked.
What sets Dr. Behera apart is not only her professional journey but the quiet strength and conviction with which she walks it. She doesn’t seek the spotlight, but her work naturally draws respect. In an age that often celebrates speed and spectacle, her story reminds us of the enduring power of consistency, compassion, and purpose.
From lecture halls to rural health camps, from academic achievements to humanitarian honours, Dr. Sharmila Behera continues to inspire as a woman of action, substance, and heart. Her journey is not just a tale of personal success—it is a legacy of healing and humanity.
