Abhishek Banerjee, national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, at last sent in the necessary paperwork to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) late on Tuesday night, only a few hours before the deadline of midnight set by the Calcutta High Court. Tuesday morning, the ED lawyer had informed Justice Amrita Sinha’s single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court that Banerjee had not given the ED hard copies of his assets and properties till late in the day.
The ED counsel added a qualifier to this statement, stating that while the hard copies of such assets and property-related documents had not yet been submitted to the central agency as of 4.43 p.m., he is unsure if any soft copies had been. This qualifier was added while referring the case to Justice Sinha’s bench. If the documents are not submitted to the agency within the allotted time frame, Justice Sinha then ordered the ED to take the required steps in accordance with law rules.
However, at about 10.15 p.m., agency insiders reported that the aforementioned documents had just been handed in as physical copies at the ED’s headquarters.
