At the 16th Indian Organ Donation Day (IODD) festivities in New Delhi, AIIMS Bhubaneswar received the esteemed “Emerging Government Institution in Organ Transplantation” award. The prize was given out during a ceremony hosted by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO). Union Minister of State for Chemicals, Fertilizers, and Health and Family Welfare Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava, Director General of Health Services Dr. Loveneesh G. Krishna, Additional Secretary Vijay Nehra, and NOTTO Director Dr. Anil Kumar were present when Anupriya Patel gave the prize.

 

Dr. Anita Saxena, President; Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, Executive Director and CEO; Dr. Prabhas Ranjan Tripathy, Medical Superintendent; and Dr. Bramhadatta Pattnaik, Head of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, accepted the award on behalf of AIIMS Bhubaneswar. The number of organ transplant surgeries at AIIMS Bhubaneswar increased from 16 in 2024 to 63 in 2025, demonstrating the institution’s remarkable advancement in the field. The institute claims that it is the only AIIMS in the nation to be recognized this year, underscoring its expanding contribution to organ transplant services.

 

Executive Director and CEO Dr. Ashutosh Biswas expressed thanks for the honor, saying it was a testament to the commitment and teamwork of the institute’s transplant teams, critical care experts, nurses, transplant coordinators, and support staff. Additionally, he expressed gratitude to donor families, saying that their unselfish choices had improved public trust in organ donation and saved numerous lives. He declared that the institution will keep growing its transplant services while raising awareness of organ donation throughout eastern India.

 

According to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, the institute has performed 78 kidney transplants since the launch of its transplant programme, including 61 living donor and 17 deceased donor kidney transplants. It has also facilitated six successful organ donations, completed four living donor liver transplants and one deceased donor liver transplant. The institute said it has made significant progress in organ retrieval, transplantation and post-transplant care within a short period while continuing public awareness campaigns and community outreach programmes to promote organ donation.
