Panic gripped the West Pratap Nagar residential area on Maholi Road in Mathura on Sunday morning following an ammonia gas leak from a nearby ice factory. Around 8:30 am, residents living close to the factory rushed out of their homes after complaining of a pungent smell and breathing discomfort.
According to officials, teams of doctors from the health department and Dial 108 ambulances were swiftly deployed to the area. The affected locality was evacuated, and traffic was halted until the situation was brought under control within an hour.
While no major injuries were reported, an 80-year-old woman experiencing breathing difficulties had to be relocated for safety. Additional Chief Medical Officer Dr. Bhoodev confirmed that prompt medical response helped prevent serious health consequences.
However, local residents alleged that the leakage had been occurring for the past three days, but no preventive action was taken. City Magistrate Rakesh Kumar stated that an investigation is underway, and strict action will be taken against those found negligent.
