Anand Sharma’s move to quit Congress

Anand Sharma’s resignation as chairman of the Congress steering committee in poll-bound Himachal Pradesh comes on the heels of senior colleague and another key ‘G-23’ leader Ghulam Nabi Azad’s resignation as chairman of the J&K Congress campaign committee. Given that the election for Congress president is scheduled for September, Sharma’s action is seen as the ‘G-23’ signalling its dissatisfaction with the party’s current state of affairs. After a series of loses from BJP Congress is looking forward to defeat its arch rival. However, trouble may be in store for the Congress as Sharma is scheduled to visit HP on Tuesday, where he will first visit his ancestral village near Kasauli before travelling to Shimla for five days. His presence, while not in opposition to Congress, is likely to portray the party as divided.
