Apple’s long-awaited entry into India’s digital payments market could finally become a reality, with Apple Pay reportedly set to launch in India as early as October 2026. According to Reuters, the initial rollout is expected to begin with credit cards issued by Axis Bank, while discussions with other major Indian banks are also understood to be underway.

The development is significant because India has one of the world’s most advanced real-time digital payment ecosystems, dominated by the Unified Payments Interface, or UPI. Apple Pay’s arrival would therefore put Apple’s global payments platform into a market where consumers already have extensive options for mobile and QR-based payments.

The reported launch follows changes in India’s payments ecosystem. Earlier this month, the National Payments Corporation of India introduced a tap-and-pay capability for UPI, allowing users to make certain payments by tapping their smartphones at compatible terminals without opening a UPI application.

Apple Pay operates differently from conventional UPI applications. It is primarily designed around storing supported payment cards in Apple’s digital wallet and enabling contactless payments through NFC technology.

The initial Axis Bank partnership could therefore provide Apple with an entry point into India’s large credit-card market. Reports have indicated that other major banks, including HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, have also been involved in discussions around Apple Pay support.

For iPhone and Apple Watch users, the service could make contactless card payments considerably more convenient. However, Apple would be entering a market where UPI has already become deeply embedded in everyday transactions.

The development also comes as India’s digital payments infrastructure continues to expand rapidly. UPI processed 24.51 billion transactions worth ₹29.82 trillion in August 2026, according to data cited by Reuters.

The exact launch date, participating banks and supported services could still change before the reported October rollout.

Apple’s entry could increase competition in India’s digital-payment and contactless-payment ecosystem while giving millions of Apple-device users another payment option.
