BHUBANESWAR: After being closed for four months, the Similipal Tiger Reserve in Mayurbhanj district has reopened for tourists, offering a unique opportunity to explore one of India’s largest and most biodiverse national parks. Known for its rich wildlife, including Bengal tigers, elephants, leopards, and over 200 species of birds, Similipal is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers.
Tourists were greeted warmly at the Pithabata Gate in Baripada and the Kuliani Gate in Jashipur by Similipal Tiger Reserve officials. From 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., 35 four-wheelers are permitted entry through the Kuliani gate, while 25 vehicles can enter via the Pithabata Gate. Entry permits are available at the booking counters at these gates, with an entry fee of Rs 100 per person.
Strict measures have been put in place to preserve the sanctuary’s pristine environment, including restrictions on plastic items, drugs, non-vegetarian foods, and flammable materials. Though Similipal typically closes from June 15 due to the monsoon season and reopens in early November, this year the park has reopened earlier on October 10, allowing visitors to enjoy the stunning scenery during the Durga Puja holidays. The waterfalls and streams are particularly beautiful at this time, thanks to the abundant post-monsoon water, adding to the charm of the reserve.
