Paradip Port in Odisha has been formally recognized as a “Mega Port” by the Centre, becoming the only port on India’s East Coast to earn the distinction under the Indian Ports Act, 2025.
On Friday, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways designated Paradip, Deendayal Port (Kandla), Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva), and Mundra Port as “Mega Ports” after analyzing them against established performance benchmarks.
The designation has bolstered Paradip Port’s status as an important marine gateway on the eastern shore, and it is projected to help expand maritime infrastructure, trade, and communication.
The award has been warmly received by Paradip Port officials, port-user agencies, and local inhabitants, with celebrations recorded in the port town following the Centre’s announcement.
